With NFL free agency in full swing, teams around the league are rounding out their rosters and rounding out their boards for the upcoming NFL Draft.
You know what that means, mock drafts will be a dime-a-dozen over the month. The 49ers have two first-round picks after trading DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for the No. 13 pick.
In his latest for CBS Sports, Chris Trapasso has the Niners taking a pass catcher with their first pick of the draft, Oklahoma receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Here is what Trapasso says about the selection:
“Kyle Shanahan probably loves YAC ability more than any other coach in the league, and Lamb is the best YAC wideout in this class by a wide margin.”
Trapasso has the 49ers trading the No. 31 pick, interestingly enough to the Colts to acquire some Day 2 picks.
Meanwhile, B/R’s Zach Buckley’s latest mock also has the 49ers taking a pass catcher at No. 13, with San Francisco selecting Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy.
Buckley has the Niners keeping the No. 31 pick and selecting Iowa EDGE rusher A.J. Epenesa.
I agree with Trapasso’s prediction that John Lynch will look to deal the team’s second first-round pick to recoup some draft capital in the early to middle rounds.
It is interesting to see the general consensus not only from draft pundits but on this site is that the Niners will be taking a receiver at No. 13.
This is a deep draft for the receiver position, but Jeudy, Lamb, and Henry Ruggs III seem to be at the top of the rankings.
I prefer Jeudy, but Lamb or Ruggs would definitely not be a bad consolation prize.
It will be interesting to see what the teams picking just ahead of the Niners will do. With the New York Jets picking at No. 11, followed by the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 12, one or two of out of Jeudy, Lamb, or Ruggs could be gone. The Jets need a bonafide No. 1 receiver to help out QB Sam Darnold, while the Raiders are still looking to land a top pass catcher after the Antonio Brown debacle.
Either way, the new league year started with a bang for the Niners, and the lead up to the draft will be exciting.
Who do you prefer the Niners to take at No. 13? Do you think they will end up keeping or trading away the No. 31 pick?
