When the Niners acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots for a second-round pick, many in the NFL thought it was a favor from Pats head coach Bill Belichick.
Miller cites several sources in his story and says when 49ers GM John Lynch reached out about a potential Jimmy G trade, Belichick countered by offering Brady.
“At the time, there was an incredible amount of buzz around the NFL that the 49ers originally asked for Garoppolo, but Belichick instead offered Brady. A Patriots source confirms that’s how it went down, and a 49ers source close to John Lynch says the first-time general manager couldn’t believe his ears when he heard the counteroffer.
Lynch had the chance to trade for the best quarterback ever to play and bring him back to his hometown? It’s the ultimate no-brainer, but it didn’t happen.
”Kraft shut that s—t down fast,” says a source close to Belichick. “So, instead, Lynch gets Garoppolo, but Brady, Belichick, and Kraft haven’t been the same since Tom learned that Bill was ready to get rid of him. And that lit a fire under his ass.”
Miller adds that a former teammate of Brady said that was the deciding factor for him to leave once he had the opportunity.
This is a bombshell, if true, but from a Niner’s perspective, I am happy with how everything went down.
Brady looked his age much of last year and definitely isn’t a long term solution at quarterback for the Bucs.
Garoppolo is 28-years-old and played well in his first full season as an NFL starter, leading the Niners to the Super Bowl. We are all hoping for him to take another step this season and lead this team to a championship.
If the Niners did acquire Brady instead of Jimmy G, how do you think things would have went for the franchise over the last two seasons?
Are you happy that Kraft reportedly shut it down?
