When the 49ers traded for Emmanuel Sanders in the middle of the season, it immediately filled a need as a top wideout was the one glaring hole that the undefeated team had. He came in and helped elevate the 49ers offense to a different level. He leaves after a magical 10 game run all the way to the Super Bowl. But not all is lost with his departure. The biggest effect of his time on the team may have came from his teaching the younger receivers how to play in the NFL. Kendrick Bourne and Deebo Samuel both played very well beside Sanders and their time with him should help them continue to grow their games. The team will need them to continue to progress with Emmanuel no longer around.
Emmanuel Sanders signed a 2 year deal with the New Orleans Saints and leaves the 49ers again with a hole in the receiving corp. Now the team will be looking for a #1 receiver to match up with their youngsters. After the Buckner trade last week, the 49ers are in a prime spot with the #13 overall pick in the draft to select a top wideout. This year’s draft has a few top end receivers that should be available at #13 and if one that the 49ers like is available, they will likely jump at the opportunity to draft them.
Even with the opportunity to draft a WR in the draft, the 49ers want to continue to add competition. On Tuesday, they signed Travis Benjamin to a one year deal. He will face an uphill battle to make the roster. The team will get Trent Taylor back, who had good chemistry with Jimmy Garoppolo in their short time playing together. They also expect to have Jalen Hurd available. If he can have a first season anywhere near what Deebo contributed in his rookie season, that would be a huge addition to the offense.
On Tuesday, the 49ers announced that they agreed to a 3 year deal with S Jimmie Ward. Jimmie played very well last season and earned the new deal that will keep him in the Bay. TE Ross Dwelley signed his one year deal to return to the team. The team also signed LB Joe Walker and DL Kerry Hyder to one year deals as well.
