Per Tom Pelissero, the Indianapolis Colts are signing former San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Sheldon Day to a one-year deal. The 49ers starting defensive tackles in the Super Bowl now play for the Colts. Over the weekend, we talked about the possibility of bringing Day back. In the poll, 63% of you said no.
There wasn’t much that Day did as a player that would make you feel like you can’t get that type of production elsewhere. In today’s game, where defenses spend 70-80% in sub-packages, a player that can’t rush the passer consistently doesn’t have much value. That’s Day, who is more of a run-stopping interior lineman. The 49ers signed Kerry Hyder to a one-year deal. He’s a better fit for the 49ers and how the game is played today. Hyder is also more versatile than Day.
The Vikings also signed defensive end Anthony Zettel on Wednesday to a one-year deal. Zettel played for the 49ers down the stretch, including in the Super Bowl. If we’re being objective, neither of these players will be missed on the field.
