There’s only a week left before the draft and the overall impression is that the 49ers will select one of the 3 “surefire” wideouts. Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb, and Henry Ruggs are expected to be the first 3 WRs off the board and with the 13th pick, most experts have the 49ers selecting the one that is available at 13. But this draft is considered to be a deep receiving draft so they could take after another need instead and pick up a good receiver in the later rounds. GM John Lynch has been very good at picking players in the later rounds with George Kittle and D.J. Jones being prime examples.

The 49ers have a recent history of drafting unproductive wideouts. Deebo Samuel had a great rookie year with 802 receiving yards, but you have to go back to Michael Crabtree in the 2009 draft to find the last productive wide receiver the 49ers have drafted. The three top receivers in this year’s draft are as highly touted as receivers can be. The team does have other needs as well and may decide that shoring up the defensive or offensive line are better options. Jimmy Garoppolo needs a replacement for Emmanuel Sanders and this draft may have that guy. Now the question is if that guy is only available in the 1st round or can the team find that player in the later rounds where John Lynch has been able to find productive players.

One name that has popped up as a potential draftee with the 13th pick is defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. After trading DeForest Buckner to get the 13th pick, Javon could be his immediate replacement. The team did not want to pay all the money they needed to keep both Buckner and Arik Armstead so they traded the guy that could get the most value back. With the pick they received, they could find his replacement on a team friendly rookie deal. The 49ers built the defense on the strength of their defensive line with the four 1st rounders and they played very well last season to help lead them to the Super Bowl. They lost one of those 1st rounders, but could replace him with another.
