With one day left until the NFL draft is conducted using social distancing guidelines, GM John Lynch has set up his draft headquarters at his home and is ready to get to work. The 49ers are in need of a few players to supplement the current roster that just made it to the Super Bowl. The team has 2 first round picks and then do not pick until the fifth round. The biggest needs they will be looking to fill are at receiver, the secondary, and both sides of the line.
The team has been linked with the top 3 wideouts (Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, and CeeDee Lamb) or defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, who would be DeForest Buckner’s immediate replacement, with the 13th overall pick. But with no Day 2 picks, the 49ers could very well leverage that pick for a haul of picks in Day 2. This draft is considered a deep draft for wide receivers. They could go for another guy who is not as highly touted as the top 3 are, but would be perfect for Kyle Shanahan’s offense while netting the team extra picks. The team could also select their guy at 13th if he is still there and trade the 31st spot for additional picks. It seems almost automatic that John trades down from one of those positions and it could be very possible that he trades back from both.
The 49ers need impactful players from this draft that can play and produce right away. Receivers and the secondary are the most important spots that need to have productive players to keep this team at the top. Offensive and defensive line help is always necessary and the 49ers would do well to add depth on each side, but if the 49ers find a playmaking receiver and a safety or corner that can play consistently well, then they will have had a great draft.
