49ers draft picks 2020: San Francisco selects WR Jauan Jennings with 217th pick

The Niners added a wideout from Tennessee

The San Francisco 49ers have selected WR Jauan Jennings with the 217th pick in the NFL draft. Jennings may be viewed as a steal at this point. He was 70th on PFF’s big board. He ran slow at the combine, and that’s likely why he dropped — he ran a 4.72 and only had a 29” vertical with a 9-11 broad jump. Those numbers are rough.

Here is the bottom line on Jennings from PFF:

Jennings’ background at QB shows up in the open field time and time again. The polish isn’t there yet, but the raw physical tools very much are. Jennings is a very strong ‘how did he fall to there?’ candidate a few years down the line. Tackling Jennings in the open field often times looks like what I imagine a person trying to tackle a horse would look like. Even if you get both of his legs, somehow, he still doesn’t go down. His suddenness and balance are top-notch for the position, which is a good combination to have. Lacking any sort of long speed though and experience against press coverage is a bad combination that he also possesses. Still, he has uncoachable YAC ability that will surely translate to the NFL, and he has all the skills necessary to get off press coverage with ease.

Sports Info Solutions gave Jennings the same grade as the following players: K.J. Hamler, Van Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk, Denzel Mims, and Michael Pittman. Wow. Here is their blurb on Jennings:

Jennings projects as a No. 3 receiver at the next level and would fit best in an offense that utilizes motion to help create mismatches and beater releases at the line of scrimmage. He projects best as a slot receiver but could play out wide. Jennings has the competitiveness, versatility, and run after catch ability to make a contribution at the next level.

Jennings said he models his game after Brandon Marshall and Jarvis Landry on the media conference call.
