49ers made a special request to play both New York teams back to back

According to Peter King, seven other teams did as well

There were quite a few teams around the NFL this year that will have to travel across the country more than once this upcoming season. In the case of the San Francisco 49ers, they’ll play both the New York Jets and Giants in Week’s 2 and 3, respectively. That’s not by accident, according to Peter King. In his FMIA column on Monday morning, King explained that the 49ers had a specific request, along with seven other teams:

“The Chargers (at Bucs, Saints), Rams (at Eagles, Bills), Jets (at Seahawks, Rams), Dolphins (at 49ers, Broncos), Cardinals (at Panthers, Jets) and Raiders (at Falcons, Jets) all got their road requests answered. San Francisco plays in MetLife Stadium in Weeks 2 and 3—at Jets on Sept. 20, at Giants on Sept. 27, both 10 a.m. PT body-clock games.”

On NFL Network Thursday night once the schedule was released, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will likely stay on the east coast in September and are already looking into places to stay. Lynch mentioned the success the 49erss had staying on the east coast last year, and as soon as the schedule was released, the Niners started looking at different venues.

If you remember how 2019 started, San Francisco did the same thing when they traveled to Tampa Bay and had to play the Bengals in the following week. San Francisco will have to go back east in Week 7 to play the Patriots. We mentioned how much travel the 49ers will have this year. While that number is slightly inflated due to going from coast to coast, it’s nice that Week’s 2 and 3 are back-to-back. The other game this season that include significant travel is at New Orleans during a tough stretch of the schedule.
