In 2018, Kyle Shanahan’s offensive assistants Mike McDaniels and Mike LaFleur were wanted to interview for positions on other teams, but Kyle did not see those positions as a promotion, so he blocked both from interviewing. On Tuesday, the NFL released new rules around coaching interviews. The rule does not allow teams from blocking their coaches from interviewing for coordinator positions on other teams. Coaches will be able to interview for any offensive, defensive, or special teams coordinator roles.
This offseason has been all about how the 49ers reloading to make another run at the Super Bowl. Joe Staley retired, Emmanuel Sanders left via free agency, DeForest Buckner was traded to the Colts, Trent Williams was traded for to replace Staley, and the team maneuvered to draft the replacements for Buckner and Sanders. But the real key to another run will be the play of Jimmy Garoppolo. He just completed his 1st full season as a starter and led the team to a 13-3 record; the first winning season since 2013.
If the 49ers had been able to finish off the Super Bowl after leading in the 4th quarter, the feeling around Jimmy G would have been much different than they are now. He would have likely won Super Bowl MVP honors, but a combination of a few missed plays and Patrick Mahomes’ play denied Jimmy those honors. Even with the great season the 49ers and Jimmy just had, there is still plenty of doubt from media and NFL fans about Jimmy’s ability to be the franchise quarterback. Another season like he had last season while leading the 49ers on another long playoff run will do a lot to change the narrative around him. With more time in the offense and the return of some of his weapons such as Jerick McKinnon and Trent Taylor, Jimmy has the potential to make another jump in his play and that could be the thing the 49ers need to win the Super Bowl.
