NFL.com’s bold prediction has the Seahawks missing the playoffs

The NFC West is thought of as the most difficult division in the NFL. You have the reigning NFC West champions in the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams finished the season on a high note after a slow start. Los Angeles had a strong draft where they added quality players that will help contribute right away. Arizona added one of the top receivers in the NFL in DeAndre Hopkins. Kyler Murray figures to improve, and the Cardinals could bolster their defense by adding Everson Griffen.

NFL.com’s Adam Schein made five bold predictions, and one of them had the Seattle Seahawks missing the playoffs:

5) Seahawks will miss the playoffs

I know that the Seahawks have been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL over the last decade, posting a winning record in each of the past eight seasons, with double-digit wins in seven of them. I know that Russell Wilson is a first-ballot Hall of Famer. And I never want to bet against fellow future gold-jacket wearers Bobby Wagner and Pete Carroll. But I have serious questions about the overall quality of this roster — especially when compared to a host of rosters across the NFC.

San Francisco, last year’s NFC champs, look even better right now. Tampa Bay won the offseason, with Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski joining a talented young roster and Jason Licht adding some key pieces in the draft. New Orleans will be squarely in the Lombardi hunt for the fourth straight season. The Cowboys and Eagles both upgraded their rosters. I have already declared the Cardinals this year’s Cinderella team. And Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers.

Don’t get me wrong: I don’t expect the Seahawks to fall apart. But they’ll lose a few more games than usual, especially in this year’s highly competitive NFC West.

Seattle will get an even better version of D.K. Metcalf, which will help their offense, but losing Jadeveon Clowney on defense is huge. Here is the Seahawks starting defensive line: L.J. Collier, Jarran Reed, Poona Ford, and Bruce Irvin. Seattle drafted a pass rusher in the second round this year, but he’s more of a power player. Speed hurt the 49ers last season, but there isn’t a player I mentioned on Seattle’s defensive line that will hurt you with athleticism. Who knows what happens with the Quinton Dunbar situation, but not upgrading in the secondary could prove costly.

As with anything Seahawks related, it’ll come down to Russell Wilson saving the day. Do you think Seattle will miss the playoffs?
