NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Richie James Jr. broke a bone in his wrist while training and is expected to be sidelined at least two months. James was going to have to work to make the roster, as the 49ers are getting a few wideouts back from injury. If he was going to make it, it was going to be because of James’ return and big play ability. Now, an injury will cost James the majority of the preseason.
That means the Niners will head into training camp down two receivers, as Deebo Samuel suffered a broken foot on Thursday. Samuel is expected to miss anywhere between 12-16 weeks, even though he says it’ll be closer to ten weeks.
The 49ers will head into camp with Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, Jauan Jennings, Jalen Hurd, Trent Taylor, Dante Pettis, Travis Benjamin, Shawn Poindexter, Chris Thompson, and Chris Finke. If James is out until mid-August, and Samuel can’t play in the preseason either, the door opens up for one of the receivers who were fighting for a practice squad spot to make the roster.
