The San Francisco 49ers have taken a couple of hits in the last two days at the wide receiver position. Richie James broke his wrist training while Deebo Samuel suffered a broken foot. The 49ers have plenty of young guys that they can develop and give a chance. Players such as Shawn Poindexter, Chris Thompson, and more will get an opportunity they previously wouldn’t have. The names at the bottom of the depth chart won’t prevent the Niners from bringing in a free agent if they feel the need for a veteran presence.
Fans love a recognizable name, so Josh Gordon and Antonio Brown are always at the top of the list. Names like Jordan Matthews have familiarity with Kyle Shanahan’s offense, but he never did anything to separate himself from the others. Kyle loves speed, and his former wideout Taylor Gabriel is available. Gabriel played under Shanahan with the Falcons in 2016. The 49ers have been aggressive when they’ve been hit with injuries int he past, or surprise retirements.
Signing a free agent wide receiver is all dependent on the health of Samuel or James and how quickly they recover. If the young wideouts on the roster show promise, then there is no reason to bring Gabriel in. San Francisco is in a nice position where they don’t have to make a move. Not many teams have that luxury.
