49ers place RB Jeff Wilson Jr. on COVID/Reserve List

The Niners also waived DL Alex Barrett and release OL Leonard Wester. That brings the roster to 79

According to Albert Breer’s most recent COVID/Reserve list, the San Francisco 49ers have added running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to the COVID/Reserve list. Again, this doesn’t mean that Wilson Jr. necessarily has tested positive for COVID. He could have been exposed to someone with a positive test. There isn’t a time limit for how long a player needs to be on the list, and I am fascinated to see how many teams use this as a way to stash players.

Obviously, you want every player to be healthy. I don’t want to minimize Wilson Jr. or Richie James’ health. With that said, they are both on the roster bubble, which ensures a way for the 49ers to keep them both on the team. That was just a thought that came up with a few friends as we were discussing different loopholes for teams to use. It’s a flawed argument, though, as the only way to be placed on the list is to test positive or be exposed to a known COVID carrier.

The 49ers also waived DL Alex Barrett and released OL Leonard Wester. The team currently has 79 players on its active roster. You are allowed to go into training camp with 80 players, so could a Damontre Moore signing be on the horizon?
