With Deebo Samuel recovering from a Jones fracture and Richie James working back from a wrist injury and Travis Benjamin opting out, the San Francisco 49ers worked out wide receivers. Donte Moncrief and J.J. Nelson in addition to Tavon Austin, per ESPN’s Field Yates. Moncrief played for the Steelers last season, but he didn’t last long. He had four catches for 18 yards. Moncrief was plagued by drops, and was benched after this play:
The last target of Donte Moncrief's Pittsburgh career? I'm not one for hyperbolics, but I can't see giving the guy a helmet again, much less a call out of the huddle. pic.twitter.com/lqXEsXjqKI

Moncrief’s DVOA was -76.3%, and he caught 27% of his passes. I’d be shocked if the 49ers signed Moncrief after how he played last season. He wasn’t confident at all, and it showed. He is fast, however.
Speaking of fast, J.J. Nelson, who ran an unofficial 4.29 40-yard dash at the combine, appeared in two games for the Raiders last season, catching four passes for 36 yards and a reception. Nelson spent the previous four seasons with the Cardinals. He did have two 500+ yard seasons in Arizona. An ankle and knee sprain has limited Nelson during the past two seasons.
Austin is the most promising player, and he also provides experience in the return game. Here is every touch from Austin in 2019:
