Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the San Francisco 49ers aren’t done bringing in wide receivers for workouts. The Niners are bringing in former Seattle Seahawks wideout Jaron Brown for a workout. Brown is a seven-year vet that has spent time with both the Seahawks and the Cardinals. Brown caught 16 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns with the Seahawks last year.
When Travis Benjamin opted out, I wrote about five potential wide receivers the 49ers would bring in to replace Benjamin, and Brown was one:
Jaron Brown
We can’t talk about any position without mentioning a former Seahawk. Those are the rules; I don’t make them. Brown started at receiver to begin last season. Brown’s first half of the season was quite different than the second half. In the first seven games, Brown was targeted 24 times. He only received four targets during the last seven games. Brown finished with a -3.1% DVOA on 16 receptions for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Brown is 30, so he doesn’t have the upside as some of the younger wideouts on the roster. Brown is a deep threat, though.
Brown is a big receiver at 6’3” who can run, he ran a 4.40 40-yard dash. Could this be related to Jalen Hurd going down at practice on Sunday? The team has yet to provide an update on Hurd. Some reports say Hurd went down with a cramp. The comments were so negative about Hurd that he deleted his Instagram.
The team may not have been as impressed with Tavon Austin or J.J. Nelson early on, or they could want another camp body. We’ll see if the team signs Brown, but it’s telling that they’re still looking at wide receivers. With Spencer Long retiring the 49ers have 79 players on their roster, so they won’t have to cut anyone if they do choose to sign Brown.
