NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that San Francisco 49ers WR Jalen Hurd is undergoing an MRI this morning after suffering what’s believed to be a major knee injury in practice on Sunday. The fear is that the MRI will reveal a torn ACL. The Athletic’s Matt Barrows said that Hurd was running on the side by himself. That would explain why the 49ers brought in Jaron Brown for a workout Monday morning.

Hurd had a back injury that derailed his rookie season, and this is another setback for the promising wideout. Hurd has yet to be healthy for an NFL regular-season game, and if the MRI reveals what Garafolo hinted at, we will have to wait another year to see the 49ers third-round pick from 2019. Hurd was expected to contribute this season. During the workouts in Nashville, a person who attended raved about the possibilities of Hurd and what he could bring to the 49ers offense.

With Deebo Samuel expected to miss the first few weeks of the season, at least, Hurd’s injury puts more pressure on guys like Kendrick Bourne and Brandon Aiyuk to perform. The schedule will make life easier for Kyle Shanahan and company, but the 49ers will be inexperienced on the perimeter to start the season, and that was with Hurd.
