Injury updates: D.J. Jones is in the concussion protocol, but should be back by Week 1

Bosa and Dwelley sat out of Saturday’s practice

The San Francisco 49ers returned to the practice field Saturday morning. Tight end Ross Dwelley didn’t practice as Kyle Shanahan said Dwelley’s foot was bothering him. Nick Bosa also didn’t practice because of a “maintenance day.” The team is going to monitor Bosa’s snaps all season. The 49ers have been practicing in “four-day blocks,” so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Bosa sit out once during each block.

The team received good news regarding nose tackle D.J. Jones. There is no long-term damage to his shoulder. Kyle Shanahan said that Jones could have returned to practice the following day, but they found out Jones had a concussion as they were checking him out. Jones is currently in the concussion protocol. Shanahan said he’ll be back in time for Week 1, which is September 13. Jones will likely return well before then.

Arik Armstead continues to work his way back. He didn’t participate fully during team drills, which he did yesterday. I’ll keep an eye out to see if Armstead practices in full on Sunday.

Shanahan said Jordan Reed is still day-to-day and doesn’t expect Reed to practice tomorrow. With Reed’s injury history, Shanahan said the team isn’t going to give Reed any additional wear and tear than they have to.
