It’s been a busy evening for the San Francisco 49ers, and none of the news items have been good. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported what we initially thought: Both Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas’s seasons are over with torn ACLs.
Additionally, Kyle Shanahan was fined $100,000 for not properly wearing a mask during Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. The 49ers were fined $250,000 as a team. As a play-caller, you’re allowed to slide your mask down to call the play but must immediately put your mask back on. Only three coaches were fined, but it feels like every coach other than Andy Reid should have received some fine. Eric Branch had a funny tweet saying, “will Shanahan request his money be used for MetLife turf enhancements?”
It’s been a brutal past few days for the Niners. You couldn’t script everything that has gone wrong. Starting with the plane being hit and up to the number of injuries that happened against the Jets. As far as the fines for masks, Shanahan’s pockets will be fine. I’m curious to see how strict the league will continue to be on coaches that have already received a fine.
