Injury updates: Tevin Coleman’s knee sprain could keep him out for the next four weeks

George Kittle will return to practice on Wednesday.

Kyle Shanahan met with reports Wednesday morning to discuss some injury updates. George Kittle will practice on Wednesday, as will Dre Greenlaw. D.J. Jones is “good to go” and won’t show up on the injury report. That’s the good news. As you might’ve guessed, Jimmy Garoppolo, Dee Ford, Raheem Mostert, and Tevin Coleman will miss practice on Wednesday.

Shanahan said he’d “be surprised” if Garoppolo practices this week. It’s safe to assume that Nick Mullens will start on Sunday, and that’s the correct decision. There’s no need to rush Jimmy G back, especially with the team playing at MetLife Stadium.

Shanahan also said he’s concerned about Dee Ford, who is a “longshot” to play this week. Shanahan said, “when you’re dealing with a back condition, you don’t know the timetable. There is no timetable for Ford’s return.” Kyle said Ford received some “medicine” this week, and the team will see how his body responds.

Shanahan said that Coleman is a candidate for the injured reserve and expects Coleman to miss the next four weeks. If Coleman lands on the IR, he’d have to sit out at least three games. That would open up a roster spot for the 49ers, though, so it makes sense to place Coleman on the IR. Shanahan said Coleman’s knee sprain is worse than Mostert’s.
