The 49ers released their practiced report for Wednesday:
Did not participate:
RB Tevin Coleman (knee)
DE Dee Ford (back)
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
Limited:
LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep), TE George Kittle (knee)
Full Participation:
CB Jason Verrett (hamstring)
Kyle Shanahan didn’t mention anything about Verrett during his press conference, but that’s likely due to his full participation during Wednesday’s practice. I’m curious if Verrett plays after Witherspoon’s poor showing against the Jets.
Kittle’s status will be something to monitor throughout the week. He’ll likely be a game-time decision.
Here is what Shanahan said about Garoppolo earlier Wednesday morning:
“Yeah, I’ll be surprised if Jimmy gets back later in the week. I know he’s still pulling to do it, but yeah, [QB] Nick’s [Mullens] ready to go. If something happens to Nick, [QB] C.J. [Beathard] will be ready to go. Nick’s got a lot of playing time with us in 2018. Prepared him for moments like this. Always does a good job in practice, and I’m excited to see him get his opportunity.”
That statement indicated Mullens would start, and Beathard will be the backup on Sunday. Let’s hope they have Kittle to throw to.
Here is what Shanahan had to say about Ford’s injury:
“I’m concerned because of what you just exactly said. When you’re dealing with a back injury, you really don’t know the timetable. I know he’s gotten some medicine this week that we’re hoping helps, but that’s a ‘wait and see’ approach. So, each day you’re looking into him, see how it goes. I’m sure it’s a long shot this week, but there is no timetable on it because you’ve got to see how the medicine reacts and if it helps. I don’t know. I don’t get as detailed as you. I know that it started with the neck, went to the back, and I’m waiting until that back is better. Sorry, man.”
There appears to be a lot of uncertainty surrounding Ford’s injury. When the head coach said he’s concerned, it’s telling.
