Each week, the NFL nominates five rookies for their Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie Player of the Week. For this week, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was one of the nominees. Aiyuk went over 100 yards from scrimmage in just his second career game and had a rushing touchdown. He faces steep competition, though he’s the only rookie nominated that one during Week 3.
The other nominees include Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who completed 70% of his passes on 44 attempts for 312 yards and two touchdowns.
The next nominee is Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who caught a couple of long passes and finished the game with seven receptions for 175 yards and a touchdown.
Running back James Robinson of the Jaguars totaled 129 yards from scrimmage and two rushing touchdowns. Finally, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 330 yards and had a touchdown as well as an interception.
You can vote for Aiyuk here. We saw glimpses of how talented the 49ers rookies were Sunday against the Giants. Aiyuk made a living on one of Kyle Shanahan’s staple RPO plays, more on that later. He also showed some veteran savvy to find space in the Giants zone and sit down in the correct spots. When the ball is in Aiyuk’s hands, he turns into a running back. It was just one game, but it’s evident that Aiyuk would be a handful for defenses moving forward.
