49ers sign Daniel Helm off Tampa Bay’s practice squad

Helm is likely Reed’s replacement

The San Francisco 49ers are bringing back tight end Daniel Helm, who the team waived before training camp, as Jordan Reed is expected to miss six to eight weeks. Helm—who was on Tampa Bay’s practice squad— likely will replace Reed, but I wonder if he replaces rookie Charlie Woerner, who has struggled as a blocker early on this season, on the active roster. I’m not sure how much either of these moves will matter if the team gets George Kittle back from injury. We’ll know more about Kittle’s status on Wednesday when San Francisco returns to practice.

The 49ers protected running back JaMycal Hasty this week and released OT William Sweet from the practice squad. If Helm is active, Woerner would likely resort to the practice squad. I’d doubt a team would claim Woerner or Helm.

Kyle Shanahan mentioned how the 49ers would look at long snappers on Tuesday. The team worked out four snappers: Andrew DePaola, Taybor Pepper, Drew Scott, and Garrison Sanborn, who was with San Francisco for three games in 2019. There haven’t been any signings yet, but we’ll update you once a move is made.
