The San Francisco 49ers have officially made their initial cut down to the 53-man roster. The team announced a handful of cuts Saturday morning after a quiet Friday. It is worth noting that this is not what the 49ers 53-man roster will look like a week from today, and possibly 24 hours from now. I. listed 52 players as the team left a roster spot open for Fred Warner, who has a chance to return from the COVID-19 list on Sunday.

There weren’t too many questions regarding which players would make the roster. There were a few positions, including whether the team would keep four running backs, seven wide receivers, and which safety would win the last spot.

Here is the full list of the 23 players released:

DL Alex Barrett

WR River Cracraft

S Johnathan Cyprien

DL Darrion Daniels

LB Evan Foster

OL Hroniss Grasu

TE MarQueis Gray

TE Chase Harrell

CB Tim Harris Jr.

RB JaMycal Hasty

FB Josh Hokit

WR Jauan Jennings

CB Dontae Johnson

OL Jaryd Jones-Smith

DL Dion Jordan

DL Cameron Malveaux

S Jared Mayden

WR Shawn Poindexter

OL Dakoda Shepley

OL William Sweet

CB Jamar Taylor

LB Joe Walker

WR Kevin White

Here is the 53-man roster following those cuts:

QB (3): Jimmy Garoppolo, C.J. Beathard Nick Mullens

RB (4): Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon, Jeff Wilson Jr.

LS (1): Kyle Nelson

Covid-19/list: LB Fred Warner

PUP: C Weston Richburg, DL Ronald Blair, DL Jullian Taylor

Warner does not count towards the 53-man roster, which likely explains Flannigan-Fowles making the initial roster. Warner can be cleared off the list at any point before the opener and be eligible to play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Sept. 13.

No real surprises. The team rolled with youth at safety going with Harris. Keeping a fourth tight end over a seventh receiver is more insurance for Reed than anything. Not having any preseason games likely made the decision easier at running back as Wilson Jr. makes it over Hasty.

With both Garland and Verrett making the roster, that would indicate that they’re closer to playing sooner than later. What are some of your takeaways from today’s roster?
