The San Francisco 49ers announced on Friday that they have signed QB Josh Johnson and OL Corbin Kaufusi to Reserve/Future contracts.
Johnson signed with the team late in the season and had a chance to be active for one of the final two games before he went on the COVID-19 list. After the Niners were hit with multiple injuries at positions with worse depth, Johnson wasn’t activated for Week 17.
Nick Mullens is a restricted free agent and C.J. Beathard is an unrestricted free agent. Johnson will have a chance to backup Jimmy Garoppolo, which is all he could ask for. After we saw from both backups this season, I’d say it’s time to shake up the QB room.
Kaufusi signed with the Saints after the 2019 NFL Draft after going undrafted. He was released before the start of the 2019 regular season. Kaufusi is 6-9, 275 pounds, and played defensive line at BYU where he started 23 games. Last season, he made the transition to the offensive line. Kaufusi spent the majority of the season on the Jets practice squad—which is fitting for the news cycle these past 20 hours.
