I know he was fully healthy, but, man, Jared Goff was brutal against the Packers. It was fitting that the game started with a poor play by Goff and finished with the same. Thankfully, for the 49ers, Los Angeles is stuck Goff.
Sounds like Williams wants to prove a point to his doubters, whoever they might be. Sounds like he wants money more than he wants to win a Super Bowl. So one way or another, he will become the highest-paid offensive lineman of all time this offseason, because he’s that good. Meaning the 49ers would have to give him an average of at least $24 million per season to keep him.
That’s quarterback money.
The 49ers certainly could give Williams all that cash and backload the deal, but they still would have the worst offensive line in the league. The 49ers gave up 78 quarterback hits last season — by far the most in the NFL. And Williams was on that line. And he misses games. He hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2013.

A potential trade could have the Jets and Niners swapping first-round picks this year, the SF 49ers giving up their second-round pick this year, a first and third next season, and perhaps throwing in a player as part of the deal.
Yes, the price would be steep, but there is a precedent for it.
Now, no one is saying Wilson will be the next Mahomes. But with Shanahan scheming plays and boasting talented offensive weapons Wilson could have at his disposal, including tight end George Kittle, wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and running back Raheem Mostert, San Francisco’s offense may be taken to the next level.
Shanahan has a history of being able to get the most out of his quarterbacks, even with a rookie under center. You need to look no further than his time with the Washington Football Team as its offensive coordinator when Shanahan had the 2012 No. 2 overall pick, quarterback Robert Griffin III, starting under center.

“He knows (the defense) like the back of his hand,” Greenlaw said last month. “(Ryans) and Saleh are definitely the leaders of the defense, just by helping and having played in that defense before, (Ryans) knows what to expect. He’s one of those guys that can break it down to where you understand it and he does a good job of just explaining exactly what he wants out of you. And he’s a players’ coach too.
“Everybody loves DeMeco just because you know he’s going to coach you hard and sometimes you ain’t going to like it, but at the same time he’s going to motivate you and tell you good job whenever you do something good. To have a coach that can give you the good and the bad, and just have your back through whatever, that makes him a perfect D-coordinator. “
It shows just how great Shanahan and John Lynch are at building their coaching staff. That they have superb coaches at almost every level of their team. The growth of their coaches that left and the ones that are being promoted shows a strong core. Best part of all is that the 49ers’ schemes should not skip a beat. Ryans assuredly will keep the defensive style intact, while implementing his own wrinkles. As for McDaniel, he is going to give a new perspective with the passing game.
Promoting from within also indicates the culture of the franchise, which I have harped on as being a cohesive one since Shanahan and Lynch took over. There is definitely a lot of things these two could have done differently over the years. But the one thing that they got absolutely right was selecting the right personnel for their staff and front office.
