John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Left Twix and Right Twix. Sometimes the bitterest of enemies start off as the greatest of friends. In the case of Trent Baalke and the 49ers, that couldn’t be more true.
Everything started out great. Baalke and Scot McCloughan helped populate the 49ers’ roster with tough, hard-nosed players who were full of potential. When Baalke took over as general manager, he won the Executive of the Year award after his first year on the job. Things were good.
And then they weren’t.
A.J. Jenkins in round one of 2012. LaMichael James a round later. Virtually no contact with Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Not to mention five (!) selections between 2013 and 2014 of players coming off significant knee injuries - including picks in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh rounds.
Why the little stroll down memory lane, you ask? Because Trent Baalke is back as a general manger in the NFL, this time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yes, the same Jacksonville Jaguars that are now coached by Urban Meyer, who just so happened to humiliate Jim Harbaugh multiple times as head coach of the Buckeyes. A fact that, I’m sure, is not lost on Mr. Baalke. Or Mr. Harbaugh, for that matter.
Hear all about that and more in today’s Stats & Eggs podcast, waiting for you in the player below.
Oh by the way, Baalke’s squad will get their chance to exact revenge for their new GM when the 49ers come to Jacksonville next season.
