The San Francisco 49ers announced they signed restricted free agent Jeff Wilson Jr. to a one-year deal. Wilson Jr. led the team in rushing yards and touchdowns during the 2020 season and proved that he could start and perform at a high level.

Wilson signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent after the 2018 NFL Draft. Wilson Jr. had a reputation for fumbling early in his career, but his talent shined this past season as he tallied career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. The same could be said for Wilson Jr. as a rusher.

Headed into his fourth season, Wilson Jr. is likely to be the 49ers RB2 and should split carries with Raheem Mostert in 2021. Wilson Jr. finished the season with 603 rushing yards, and 373 of those came after contact.

He also broke a tackle over 10% of the time while gaining a first down on nearly a quarter of his carries. Wilson Jr. has the best vision on the team for my money. It was smart of San Francisco to bring him back.

The 49ers won’t have this luxury next offseason, as Wilson Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent in 2022.
