ESPN’s Nick Wagoner reported that former San Francisco 49ers quarterback coach Shane Day has moved on to the Los Angeles Chargers and will be their QB coach/passing game coordinator.
The Niners hired Rich Scangarello as their quarterback coach on January 18. With Mike McDaniel serving as the offensive coordinator, there wasn’t any room for Day on the staff. The hope is that Jimmy Garoppolo can return to form with Scangarello back in the fold. Scangraello served as the 49ers QB coach in 2017 and 2018.
The shakeup along the 49ers staff may not be done, as The Athletic’s Matt Barrows wrote that 49ers assistant Michael Clay is being considered for both the Eagles and Jets special teams coordinator position. Clay was hired when San Francisco brought on Chip Kelly and has been with the team since.
According to the team's website, Clay served as an assistant special teams coach in 2016, then a strength and conditioning assistant in 2017, and worked alongside special teams coordinator Richard Hightower since 2019. Clay’s official title is assistant special teams coach.
We’ll be sure to provide updates if any other coaching moves take place.
