Rosen will backup Beathard for the second straight week

Due to injuries, Josh Johnson wasn’t promoted to the active roster

On Friday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was hopeful the team would have three quarterbacks active Sunday against the Seahawks:

“Yeah, the backup quarterback is going to be Josh [Johnson.] The next person will ask me to clarify, so I will, but I want to get all three up. I don’t know if I’ll be able to because [QB] Josh Johnson, we have to flex him. We’re only allowed three flexes or four with the extra O-Linemen. So, just looking at our roster, I’ve got to find out who we have to flex up total just to be able to field 48 guys. If I don’t have to do that, I’m for sure going to get Josh Johnson up. That’s why I haven’t decided on our two. If I can’t get him up, then without a doubt, it’ll be the other guy, [QB] Josh Rosen.”

Because of injuries at positions where the Niners lacked depth, Johnson wasn’t promoted to the active roster on Saturday. Rosen will serve as the 49ers backup for the second straight week. I’m curious whether Shanahan will continue to have three quarterbacks active next season, given the position's injury issues this year.

San Francisco activated G Tom Compton from the injured reserve. WR Jordan Matthews and K Tristan Vizcaino were also added to the active roster from the practice squad. DL Josiah Costner and OL Isaiah Williams were activated from the practice squad as COVID replacements.

Finally, OL Aaron Neary was released from the practice squad, and the team added punter Drew Kaser to the practice squad.
