It’s not even the end of January and already thousands of words have been written about the 49ers quarterback situation. Some of you have commented about how you’re tired of all the different stories we’ve posted about the issues the team has had under center in recent years. And then on Thursday, the most interesting 49ers quarterback rumor of them all emerged from Houston - and it could be more than just a pipe dream.
49ers Twitter was already heating up when reports of Deshaun Watson’s discontent started making the rounds, and when Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk mentioned the 49ers in a story about how Watson’s new contract isn’t unmovable, that heat turned into a full on inferno.
As I said in today’s Stats and Eggs Podcast - don’t rule out the possibility that the 49ers make a run at him.
If the Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch regime has shown us anything in four years, it’s that they aren’t afraid to pay a premium to acquire what they view as a premium player.
They paid Kyle Juszczyk more money than any fullback has ever gotten in the history of the NFL.
They paid Jerrick McKinnon a boatload of money. Ditto Kwon Alexander.
And they aren’t afraid to pay the iron price for players, either.
They gave up multiple draft picks for Trent Williams. And for Emmanuel Sanders. And they gave up picks and cash for Dee Ford.
The 49ers swing for the fences.
We have said over and over on this site that this offseason is going to be a ton of fun. The playoffs haven’t even started yet and we’re already talking about Deshaun bleeping Watson.
Buckle up.
