They haven’t said so publicly, but given their current circumstances, the 49ers have to feel like their backs are against the wall this week. They’re 2-3 on the year, they’ve lost three straight games, the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams are threatening to run and hide with the division title.
A loss Sunday night would not only snuff out any hope of an NFC West title but also put a playoff spot in serious jeopardy. In today’s Gold Standard Podcast, we offered the following advice from a movie called Poolhall Junkies.
The jackals are here, and they’re barking. Kyle Shanahan’s offensive prowess has been questioned by fans more than ever before. Sunday will mark 364 days since the last time his team won a game by more than one score. His offense hasn’t put up more than 7 points in the first half since Week 1.
It’s time for Kyle to show the jackals who he is. He’s had a week to prepare. He is starting his preferred choice at quarterback. His running backs are healthier than they have been since the season began. The opposing defense is one of the worst in the league and just lost one of their best players for the season.
Like Christopher Walken said, “Don’t just beat him. Kick his ass.”
With the world watching on Sunday Night Football, show everyone that you’re still the coach who is three steps ahead of defenses. Get back to being the guy that had the Packers so utterly figured out in the NFC Championship game that he ran a draw on 3rd and 8 for a 36-yard touchdown. Get back to being that guy you were in the picture we’re using for this story (and by the way, bringing back the Shanahat would be a perfect subtle message to the team about getting back to kicking butt).
If he can’t do it now, with so many factors tilted in his favor by the circumstances above, it’s fair to wonder if the lion will ever wake up at all.
