There probably isn't a team in the NFL that needs a win this week, more than the San Francisco 49ers. This team is coming off of a bye week, after losing 3 games in a row. The 49ers also haven't won a home game since October of 2020. There isn't a better time to right the ship, than this Sunday night when the 49ers take on the Indianapolis Colts.
But there's more at stake than the overall record of the underperforming 49ers. Many fans and analysts had this team as favorites to make a deep playoff run. The fanbase itself is even on the verge of an all out mutiny; and, it appears no one is safe. From how the team has handled the QB position, to the way Kyle Shanahan manages personnel, to the way John Lynch scratches his ear when asked if the team is in "crisis mode." Everything is being overly analyzed by beat writers, analysts and Faithful alike. And rightfully so.
There's a weirdness surrounding this franchise, from the top on down. Nothing makes sense, and no one seems to be in a hurry to make it make sense. Shanahan seems perfectly fine with delaying the development of rookie QB Trey Lance, in favor of a struggling Jimmy Garoppolo. Jimmy has ridden the coat tails of a great 2019 defense and running game, and seems to be given the majority of the credit for being a "winning QB." No matter how mediocre his game play is, fans and the team alike point to his record as justification for why he needs to be playing. Never mind the fact that the front office has been looking for his replacement since the 2019 season. The bottom line is Jimmy is not playing well enough to sit Trey, and that needs to change. This week Trey is nursing a knee injury so he should be out anyways. If the 49ers lose to the Colts, then they need to make that switch and not look back. Trey's development should be top priorityfor this coaching staff. Make the switch to silence the noise.
Fans have also been wondering why WR Brandon Aiyuk isn't getting the ball. According to the front office, it's because he's not making the "strides" he needs to be making to see an increased role. According to the All 22 game tape, that statement makes no sense. On tape we see a player making tough contested catches. He's creating enough separation to still get the ball, and he's blocking down field. It doesn't appear he's even in the majority of options on the plays being called. He is simply not being involved in the game plan. How do they silence the noise? Be transparent on what strides you want to see as coaches. Flat out let everyone know. They have no problem calling people out it seems. This type of treatment didn't bode well for Dante Pettis. I'll be damned if we turn Aiyuk into the next Pettis. Make it make sense, and be more transparent.
Winning is the best way to silence the critics. And make no mistake about it, this game could be one of the biggest regular season games in the Shanahan/ Lynch era. Kyle needs to stop coaching like he's on the hot seat. Where is our offensive "genius?" He needs to show some type of urgency in the development of his young QB. Go ahead and play Jimmy all year and miss the playoffs Kyle. You think the fan base is making noise now? Just wait. As a fan I am begging this organization to silence the noise. I am begging this organization to find a way to sustain some success. As fans we are not stupid. We know there is something going on behind the scenes. Bring this fan base together and stop making everything so weird. Silence the noise.
