It might officially be the start of a new era in San Francisco. 49ers quarterback Trey Lance started the second half against the Seattle Seahawks over incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo. According to the 49ers, Garoppolo is questionable with a calf injury.

Lance, of course, was selected with the third overall pick in this year’s draft out of North Dakota State. While the top prospect has received plenty of hype, head coach Kyle Shanahan has been tentative to give him playing time over Jimmy G. The calf injury may have sparked the move. Still, multiple reporters at the game saw Shanahan have a conversation with Garoppolo during halftime, which suggests it may have been motivated by an up-and-down performance. Garoppolo was 14-for-23 for 165 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception in the first half against the Seahawks.

Lance has played occasionally through the first few weeks of the season in specific short-yardage packages. He has completed his only pass attempt for a touchdown and ran the ball four times for three yards and a touchdown.
