We haven’t turned the page on Week 4 yet. But, thanks to a new partnership with DraftKings, we’ll be releasing opening odds every Monday for the next 49ers game.
The 49ers are 5.5-point underdogs to the undefeated Arizona Cardinals. The total on the game is 51.5. Vegas releases lookahead lines before the start of the NFL season. A month ago, the 49ers were one-point favorites against Arizona.
Fast forward to the Monday following Week 4, and the Cardinals are the fifth team since the merger in 1970 to start 4-0 with 30+ points and 400+ yards in each game. The other three teams were the ‘13 Broncos, ‘11 Patriots, ‘07 Patriots, and ‘02 Raiders. So, the other teams that have accomplished this feat made the Super Bowl, and their QB won the MVP. If memory serves, each of those teams lost the Super Bowl.
I’m still not entirely sold on the Cardinals. Kyler Murray is playing out of his mind and is the clear-cut MVP through four games. Kliff Kingsbury puts a lot on Murray’s plate, and other teams eventually figure out “hero ball” at some point during the regular season.
Also, I’m not sure that the Cardinals can cover. They are playing better football than the 49ers are right now, and that’s why this line is +5.5 for San Francisco. If Trey Lance is under center, expect Arizona to throw the kitchen sink at the rookie to confuse him. It’ll be on the Niners coaching staff to have an answer.
Odds/lines subject to change. T&Cs apply. See draftkings.com/sportsbook for details.
