Per ESPN's Field Yates, the 49ers are hosting linebacker Michael Kendricks on a visit. The team released Kendricks off the injured reserve on September 4 with an injury settlement. Now, per Yates, "a return to San Francisco could be on the horizon."
You never want to wish an injury on a player, but hosting Kendricks is the likely corresponding move for another injury. Kyle Shanahan is set to speak to the media at 3:30 p.m. PT Monday. So we'll have an idea why the Niners are considering bringing back Kendricks in a little over an hour from now.
Here's what Kyle Shanahan and DeMeco Ryans said in their pressures back in training camp about Kendricks:
“I mean we played against Mychal for a long time. I mean, going back when I was in the NFC East, going against him in Philly all the time. And he’s done a hell of a job in Seattle these last couple of years.”
Ryans:
“It’s not all new to him. Maybe new terminology and things like that he just has to translate, but Mych, he’ll grasp the concepts pretty quickly. He’s a good football player, a good veteran player who’s done it in this league, and I’m just excited to add some depth to that room with a veteran who’s done it before.”
If healthy, the coaching staff may prefer a veteran linebacker over Marcell Harris or Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles. That's just as if not more likely for the reasoning to bringing in Kendricks.
We'll update you once Shanahan speaks later Monday afternoon.
