Tavon Wilson and Mohamed Sanu are headed to the injured reserve

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Mike McGlinchey has a torn quad and will undergo surgery that will force him to miss the remainder of the season. However, Shanahan praised McGlinchey for bouncing back after a tough year and putting in the work this past offseason to become a better player.

Tavon Wilson started in place of the injured Jimmie Ward. Shanahan said Wilson is likely headed to the injured reserve with a foot injury, and he’ll be out “awhile.” If Ward cannot return, Tony Jefferson will start at safety.

Wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who has ingrained himself as WR3, is headed to the injured reserve with a knee sprain. He’ll also be out “awhile,” per Shanahan. Early in the third quarter, this was the play where Sanu was injured:

It’s impressive that Sanu finished the game. Sanu played 56% of the snaps Sunday compared to Jauan Jennings 8% and Trent Sherfield’s 7%.

Speaking of wide receivers, Shanahan said the team couldn’t afford to put a claim in for Odell Beckham Jr. for “financial reasons.” That’s not much of a surprise, as OBJ would cost $7.25 million in cap space. He’s more likely to clear waivers and select his destination.

Cornerback Josh Norman will be limited with a rib injury, while Dre Kirkpatrick is day-to-day with an ankle injury.

The 49ers will be forced into playing one of their rookies from the 2021 draft class, Deommodore Lenoir or Ambry Thomas, if neither Norman nor Kirkpatrick are healthy enough to play Monday night. Neither rookie has stepped onto the field since Week 3.

Shanahan said he wanted Norman to cool off on the bench but was OK with him going back into the game. He said he was fine with the decision to keep him on the bench, and Shanahan “liked the way he plays.” Shanahan added there was no consideration of releasing Norman over his penalty.

There’s an outside chance safety Tarvarius Moore could return from an Achilles injury this season. However, Shanahan said he’s not expecting wide receiver Jalen Hurd back this year: “We tried to give him some rest, and it’s not working out. It’s not healing the way we want.”

There is sure to be some shuffling along the offensive line. The options at right tackle include Jaylon Moore, Tom Compton, and Daniel Brunskill. Remember, Brunskill was competent in 2019, filling in for both Mike McGlinchey and Joe Staley when they were injured during the middle of the season.

It’s evident Brunskill’s future isn’t at right guard. Could it be Aaron Banks's time? Shanahan said Banks “had a couple of good weeks here. His best two weeks lately, and he’s starting to push Brunskill a little bit at right guard.”
