Are the 49ers willing to overpay for a quarterback?

Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians just coached his team to a Super Bowl title under the mantra, “No risk it, no biscuit.” If the 49ers are going to make a move at quarterback, do they have to follow a similar philosophy? In today’s Niners Nation Shanaplan podcast, Akash Anavarathan wondered whether Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have the...onions...for such a transaction.

“When you trade for a quarterback, and one of these veteran quarterbacks are available, it’s gotta hurt...There’s got to be some pain associated with it because there’s no free lunch when you get a franchise quarterback. There’s some risk associated with it, and the 49ers are very risk-averse in my opinion. They do these value, low-risk deals where if that player doesn’t work out or whatever the case, it doesn’t hurt as much because of the draft capital that was associated with it. They’re in on all these guys, but once they realize that the risk gets too high, they tap out a little bit. When it comes to the quarterback position, you can’t be that way. There are enough teams out there that want the player that you do, so you have to do something that hurts a little bit to get that player.”

Akash went on to point out that the Jimmy Garoppolo, Trent Williams, and Dee Ford trades were all value deals that weren’t associated with a ton of risk. In order to get a franchise-type quarterback in the open market, the 49ers aren’t going to be able to make the kind of deal.

So the question then becomes, do Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have the stomach to pull the trigger on a deal for someone, even if they have to overpay to do it? Are they willing to go against their value-driven process to get the guy that they want?
