Just over a year ago, the 49ers hired Tony Oden to replace Joe Woods as their defensive backs coach. A year later, Oden is off to New York, where he’ll serve as the defensive backs coach for the Jets under new head coach Robert Saleh, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

I’m not sure how much of an impact Oden had as opposed to Woods. We saw drastic differences in coverages from 2018 to 2019, which would suggest that Woods was the driving force and not Oden.

The Jets also hired Marquand Manuel as their safety coach. Manuel worked with Saleh in Seattle. Saleh continues to hire a strong and deep coaching staff in New York with familiar faces.

These familiar faces could play a role when it comes to free agency in a month or so. K’Waun Williams, Ahkello Witherspoon, Richard Sherman, and Jason Verrett are all unrestricted free agents, as is safety Jaquiski Tartt. The Jets have money to work with, and it’s hard to argue that each player wouldn’t start in New York.

How many 49ers end up with the Jets during free agency?
