Josina Anderson reported that former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is signing a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks. We’ll see how much Seattle paid Witherspoon, but after losing Shaquill Griffin, the Seahawks could feature a starting cornerback duo of Witherspoon and D.J. Reed, who finished the season on a strong note.
Witherspoon’s tenure was up and down with the 49ers. He was benched a couple of times during the Super Bowl run in 2019. This past season, the team elected to start Brian Williams over Witherspoon when San Francisco hosted the Miami Dolphins. NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco said Witherspoon was “a constant source of frustration” for Kyle Shanahan. Now, the Niners will see Witherspoon twice a year.
He’ll have to beat out Tre Flowers, but in a different setting, I’d bet Witherspoon rises to the occasion. I also believe he’ll take the momentum from how this season ended and carry that into 2021. The 49ers were always going to lose a player to the Seahawks this offseason because that’s how football works. We’ll update this article once more contract details are released.
