NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the 49ers are hosting veteran QB Joe Flacco on a visit as a potential backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. Flacco made $1.5 million last year and would likely sign a similar one-year deal with San Franciso.
Flacco had 134 attempts last season and completed 55% of his passes with a 6/3 touchdown to interception ratio. He’d be an upgrade from the current crop of backups on the roster, but that’s a low bar to clear.
At 36, Flacco must have impressed 49ers quarterback coach Rich Scangarello, who coached Flacco in New York and Denver. Scangarello must’ve told the 49ers brass that Flacco is great behind the scenes, which is what matters for a backup. Their job is to help the starter with preparation.
Some believe that this is an endorsement from the team to bring Garoppolo back. Flacco could also be a teacher for a rookie as well. I’m not sure that it matters as Flacco would be making under $2 million per season.
How would you feel about Flacco coming to the 49ers?
