Stats & Eggs: The 49ers are trying to run it back...again

Yet another 49ers free agent stays with the team

The 49ers said all year that they would prioritize keeping their own free agents with the team rather than sign a lot of the talent on the open market, and they’ve certainly followed through with that plan this offseason.

After yesterday’s contract with Jaquiski Tartt, the 49ers have now brought back almost all of their most important free agents. Trent Williams, Jason Verrett, Kyle Juszczyk, D.J. Jones, Dontae Johnson, Robbie Gould, and counting have all chosen to stay with the scarlet and gold for at least one more year.

Time will tell if this is the best strategy. As Leigh Steinberg recently told Jas Kang, “free agency is where B+ players get A+ contracts,” so maybe it’s smart to prioritize retention over acquisition. On the other hand, the 49ers were also one of the most injured teams in the last 20 years in 2020, so maybe bringing in some new blood would do them good?

Regardless of where you come down, check out today’s Stats & Eggs podcast to get all the latest news on the team while you drink your morning coffee. You can hear it below, or anywhere they serve up podcasts hot and fresh.
