Kyle’s update, 1:30 p.m. PT: The 49ers have signed Gallman, per Field Yates. He’ll compete for RB3 with Hasty and a potential draft pick.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported the San Francisco 49ers are hosting free agent running back Wayne Gallman, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Clemson. Gallman started ten games this past season for New York and averaged 4.6 yards per carry on 147 attempts with six touchdowns. Through the air, Gallman added 21 receptions for 114 yards.

As a rookie, Gallman had his best season. While he didn’t rush for as many yards, Gallman had 193 yards receiving. His total points earned in ‘17 was 11 compared to five this past season on a similar number of touches.

The 49ers don’t have a lot of depth at the running back position. There is Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr., both of who suffered from injuries this past year. After that, there are a lot of question marks. JaMycal Hasty is coming off a season-ending injury. Gallman has four years of experience and is at his best went rushing outside of the tackle.

Gallman was known as a speedy running back coming out of college. Last season, on rushes outside of the tackle, Gallman averaged an eye-popping 8.8 yards per carry on limited sample size. He also broke 17 tackles. Gallman would serve as RB3 but would have to compete with Hasty, the other runners on the roster, and a potential draft prospect.
