I love seeing people overreact to the press conference. Perhaps I’m guilty of this myself, too. You ask one person, and they came away thinking, “Jones is definitely the pick.” I saw the same with Lance, and even Fields.

Speaking of Lance, we’ll be interviewing him today.

Three Biggest Takeaways from the 49ers Pre-Draft Press Conference

1. The 49ers traded up for a “starting” quarterback.

Shanahan used that word 12 times. He made it clear he wants a rookie quarterback who can start, which is different from what he and Lynch said immediately after the trade. Back then, they said they wanted the rookie to sit and develop behind Garoppolo.

On Monday, Shanahan changed his tune.

“We made a decision in this process that we felt we needed to get a starting quarterback this year and add that to our team,” Shanahan said.

So it seems like he wants the most pro-ready quarterback, and that might be Mac Jones. Although it seems wrong to draft a quarterback based on which one is the most “pro-ready,” doesn’t it? You’re supposed to draft the quarterback who will have the best career, and that’s Trey Lance, from what I can tell.

San Francisco 49ers like five QBs as fit with No. 3 overall pick in 2021 NFL draft; will be Kyle Shanahan’s call

In the meantime, all eyes remain on which quarterback, exactly, McGlinchey will be blocking for in 2021.

“Do we know exactly who we want?” Shanahan said. “Maybe. Probably. But maybe not. I don’t feel like we need to say that. That’s not just for our case. But lots of stuff happens between now and the draft and you don’t want the whole league knowing exactly what you’re set on four days before the draft and we also care about a lot of people who have been involved in this ... I don’t know if I want the league to know. I don’t think it necessarily helps and that’s why no one is really going to know whether we know or not until we pick. That’s kind of what we’re comfortable keeping it at.”

John Lynch will ‘always defer’ to Kyle Shanahan on QBs; 49ers vow to make ‘great decision’ at No. 3

“Ultimately someone’s got to be charged with making a decision, and in this case, it’s the both of us,” Lynch said. “Everyone has in their contract ‘you do this.’ The draft is mine. But I told Kyle from the beginning that he and I are doing this together and when it comes to quarterbacks, I’d be foolish, I believe, we have a head coach who’s also our offensive play-caller. I will always defer to him.”

49ers NFL Draft 2021 Rumors: Shanahan Wants Mac Jones; ‘Many’ Want Trey Lance

I’m told that many in the 49ers’ personnel department have pushed for North Dakota State QB Trey Lance but that coach Kyle Shanahan wants to draft Alabama’s Mac Jones. One person I spoke to even heard that Shanahan might “acquiesce” to the scouting department on the selection, but others have said that seems unlikely. At this time of year, there is a lot of seed planting with the rumor mill, and it could certainly be the case here.

49ers reveal 75th anniversary logo to be worn during draft, in season

“The past seven and a half decades of 49ers football have provided generations of Faithful with countless unforgettable plays, players, and memories, and my family and our organization look forward to celebrating that storied history all year long through this campaign,” 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement. “Our 75th Anniversary season promises to create new memories for both the seventy thousand Faithful we look forward to welcoming back to Levi’s Stadium and he millions of Faithful around the world.”
