Hashtag “anyone but Mac” came true Thursday night. I’m excited to cover Trey Lance and see how his game evolves. This kid is 20-years-old and was a top three pick in the NFL Draft. That’s all you need to know.
I got the sense from Kyle Shanahan that he wants to see Lance play before the team does anything with Jimmy Garoppolo, who was reportedly being shopped the past two days.
Kyle Shanahan changes tune on Jimmy Garoppolo’s 49ers future
“If Jimmy isn’t here on Sunday, I would be disappointed,” Shanahan told reporters during the draft. “It would be a tough situation if Jimmy wasn’t here.”
Shanahan added that he called a ticked-off Garoppolo earlier this week to clarify a quote from a press conference in which he was asked about the quarterback’s future with the team.
“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive on Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday,” Shanahan said Monday.
When news surfaced this afternoon that the 49ers offered the third overall pick to the Packers for Aaron Rodgers, it wasn’t news to Rodgers.
Rodgers knew about the offer. And wanted the Packers to take it.
A league source tells PFT that Rodgers wanted the Packers to take the 49ers’ offer, which was for the third pick and more. It’s unclear where Rodgers would go from here.
Mac Jones ‘secretly’ wanted Patriots, not 49ers, to draft him
“At the end of the day you kinda want to just get the right fit, and I feel like secretly I wanted to go to the Patriots all along,” Jones said. “So I’m actually really happy that it happened.”
Getting the chance to play for Kyle Shanahan likely was enticing to all three of the quarterbacks available when the 49ers went on the clock with the No. 3 pick, but he and general manager John Lynch ultimately decided that Trey Lance will be a better fit for the organization going forward.
The 49ers bluffed like champions. Now they need Trey Lance to prove he was worth it
“You don’t want to sway people,” Shanahan said. “You want people to work their butts off and give you their honest opinion.”
Once the Niners traded up to the third spot in the draft on March 26, their selection became an item of intense interest, including news reports citing “sources” that the team was going to draft Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.
It was all wrong.
“He is a true quarterback in every aspect that he plays,” Shanahan said. “The skill set he has. How intelligent he is. How he handles himself.”
Jimmy Garoppolo fuming at 49ers after cryptic press conference
“What’s the deal with Jimmy Garoppolo? Here’s what I know: Garoppolo and his camp were not happy after the latest Kyle Shanahan press conference, and they have been allowed to work out a contract with other teams,” Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard wrote this week.
“The biggest sticking point — and there is some competition for Garoppolo — is the trade compensation. The 49ers refuse to face the reality they have lost their leverage.”
