Day 2 mock draft: A safety in the second round?

Some mocks have the 49ers drafting a safety, while others think DT.

If you had Trey Lance to the 49ers, come claim your prize. When I told you yesterday that would be the last day of mock drafts, I lied. Let’s just say this weekend will be to be safe.

San Francisco could stand to add a cornerback, edge rusher, wide receiver, and depth along the offensive line. Adding a pass-catching running back wouldn’t hurt, either.

Let’s see who mock drafts believe the 49ers will select today.

43. San Francisco 49ers

  • Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU (6-1, 208 pounds)

The 49ers need to think about the near future of safety with Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward fading on the back end. Moehrig is the most complete playmaker in a deep class for the position.

  • Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Memphis (5-11, 191 pounds)

The 49ers do have Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. but they also had more durability issues in the backfield last season. Gainwell is a great value pick here as he can excel in Kyle Shanahan’s zone-blocking scheme to help new first-round QB Trey Lance.

43. San Francisco: Richie Grant, S, UCF

Jaquiski Tartt has had a rash of injuries over the past few seasons. Grant, an undersized but all-around solid and aggressive safety, would at least an important third safety if not a starter in San Francisco.

102. San Francisco: Benjamin St-Juste, CB, Minnesota

St-Juste doesn’t have a ton of experience at the position but can develop over time, maturing when some critical contracts expire elsewhere in the secondary.

43. San Francisco 49ers: Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama

The slide has to end at some point, and the 49ers, having already selected their franchise quarterback, can afford to take a chance on value here. There have been rumors that Christian Barmore‘s coachability is a concern.

Nevertheless, midway through the second round, for a team that could use another dominant physical specimen alongside Javon Kinlaw, Barmore presents an enticing opportunity. If Barmore can take to the 49ers’ coaching, he and Kinlaw could potentially form a devastating interior duo.

102. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Myers, C, Ohio State

43. San Francisco: Levi Onwuzurike, DT, Washington

The rumor mill has said that Shanahan is high on a few Washington prospects, so Onwuzurike wouldn’t be surprising. With that said, between him and Barmore, I don’t know how a defensive tackle fits into the equation after the Niners added Zach Kerr and Maurice Hurst this offseason.

I’m not following the need for a safety, either. The team re-signed Jaquiski Tartt and added Tavon Wilson for depth. With Jimmie Ward, Tarvarius Moore, and Marcell Harris, it’d be difficult for a second-round safety to crack the lineup. I’m also not as high on Moehrig as others are.

We’ll talk about the best players available next, but there should be a talented cornerback at No. 43 overall who could help the Niners right away. Then, come No. 102, the value at wide receiver should be there for the taking. Today should be fun.
