After trading back five spots with the Raiders and picking up an additional fourth-rounder, the 49ers select Notre Dame guard Aaron Banks, who is 6-5, 325 pounds. The Niners continue to invest in their quarterback.

Banks has an opportunity to start at right guard. He’s known as a big, strong offensive lineman. The scouting report on Banks is that he isn’t the most nimble, but he’s great in pass protection.

Here’s Sports Info Solutions scouting report on Banks. They ranked him as the 11th-best guard in the draft:

Banks can be a solid starting guard with his massive frame and strong anchor in pass pro but he lacks the natural athleticism and positional flexibility to be an elite starter.

Banks projects to be a starting-caliber guard at the next level. His size and length may suggest that he could be an effective tackle, but his lack of natural athleticism will restrict him to strictly be an interior lineman. Even with some of his deficiencies to generate power in one-on-one situations, Banks is better off in a gap scheme, as it complements his natural size and strength.

Strengths: Anchor • Awareness • Sustain

Weaknesses • Reactive athleticism • Power in the run game • Range

That sounds like a player who doesn’t fit the 49ers' offense. At least their running game. I haven’t watched Banks, but he must be stout in pass protection.

This quote is from someone who watched Notre Dame:

“Awesome, and room to get better. Most physical ability of the three guys draft-eligible at Notre Dame. When they put him in the lineup in ‘18, he changed the whole intensity of the line in the running game. He’s gotta clean up some pass fundamentals, but he’ll kick ass in that system.”
