What Kyle wants, Kyle gets

The most closely guarded secret in the entire NFL right now is who the 49ers are going to select three weeks from now with the third overall draft pick. Despite a lot of speculation online, Kyle Shanahan is reportedly keeping the decision very close to the vest - even from others in the organization. On today’s Niners Nation Gold Standard Podcast, we tried to talk with someone that might have more insight into what the team was thinking - KNBR’s John Lund.

Never one to mince words, John thinks Trey Lance will get the call.

“He didn’t play against high-level competition but it was high enough. You go back to the fact that he ran a pro style offense, he was under center, he was very good in play-action. These are the type of things Kyle Shanahan covets in his quarterback...Trey Lance has proven that he can do all of these things despite the fact that he’s inexperienced. One of the guys that Kyle, I know for a fact, absolutely loves of these new brand of quarterbacks, is Josh Allen. The closest thing in this draft to Josh Allen is Trey Lance. That’s the guy.”

The argument can easily be made for Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Mac Jones, to be honest. My official position is to hope for either Fields or Lance, but trust in Kyle to make the right decision. I could be wrong, but much of the sentiment I see online leads me to believe there will be some sort of revolt if Jones is indeed the pick.

(Ironic for a fanbase that goes by The Faithful, don’t you think?)
