The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’ve waived running back Austin Walter. This comes after the team selected two running backs in the 2021 NFL Draft. Both Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell are expected to make the roster, which leaves Walter as the odd man out.
It would have been tough for Walter to make the roster had the Niners only drafted Sermon. Add Mitchell into the mix, and there’s no guarantee Wayne Gallman makes the team unless he stands out during training camp and in the preseason.
Walter (5-8, 190) signed to the team’s practice squad on September 23, 2020. He went on to appear in four games and register one carry for three yards in addition to one reception for 27 yards on offense to go along with five kickoff returns for 93 yards on special teams. Walter signed a one-year extension with the team on February 8, 2021.
