We knew Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley, and Jaquiski Tartt would be wearing different jersey numbers in 2021, as they each announced it on their Instagram. On Monday morning, the San Francisco 49ers officially announced 11 other non-rookie jersey numbers that will be different for this upcoming season:
2- Jason Verrett
4- Emmanuel Moseley
7- Jared Mayden
18- Mohamed Sanu
22- Wayne Gallman Jr.
26- Jaquiski Tartt
32- Tavon Wilson
47- Nathan Gerry
50- Alex Mack
56- Samson Ebukam
81- Trent Sherfield
92- Zach Kerr
96- Maurice Hurst
98- Arden Key
Something about a member of the secondary wearing a single-digit number is so perfect to me.
Ebukam previously wore No. 50, but that’ll belong to Mack now. Mack wore No. 51 for five years in Atlanta. That number belongs to Azeez Al-Shaair. I wonder if Mack tried to get his number from Al-Shaair and if the third-year pro didn’t budge.
Gallman takes Verrett’s old number, Sherfield will wear Jordan Reed’s previous number, Kerr takes over for Kerry Hyder, and Hurst does the same for Dion Jordan.
As for the rookies, here’s a look at their numbers, based on what they wore at last Friday’s minicamp:
5- Trey Lance
62- Aaron Banks
28- Trey Sermon
41- Ambry Thomas
76- Jaylon Moore
38- Deommodore Lenoir
29- Talanoa Hufanga
49- Elijah Mitchell
Poor Mitchell. That’s an ugly number for a running back. Something tells me if he makes the roster, he won’t be wearing No. 49 for much longer.
I like 28 on Sermon. We know Lance is a big guy, but based on this video, Sermon qualifies as a large human, too:

That stood out to me more than any practice completion percentage numbers tweeted out without any lineman on the field.
