The media had their first opportunity to watch the 49ers for the first time since November of 2020. After practice was finished, Kyle Shanahan spoke, as did a few prominent members of the team who hadn’t spoken to the Niners media in months.
George Kittle, Fred Warner, and Jimmy Garoppolo all shared what they’ve seen in practice, how their offseason went, and everything in between.
As you could imagine, Jimmy was bombarded with questions about trade rumors, rehabbing, and his relationship with Trey Lance. Jimmy’s media sessions often resemble “the Patriot way.” By that, I mean he says a lot without saying anything at all. In Garoppolo’s defense, many of the questions were the same but worded in a different way.
There’s this rush to figure out the dynamic between the two quarterbacks. Jimmy said they’ve hung out a couple of times. It’s been a month. That’s to be expected.
When asked about his first impressions of Trey or how their relationship is, Jimmy responded, “Trey’s real cool” and “Trey’s been cool.” Garoppolo doesn’t want to force their relationship:
“We’ve had a great relationship so far. All the QBs, we’ve got a big QB room right now. It’s a good group of guys, fun to be around. It’s kind of one of those things, I don’t want to do anything out of the ordinary, do something that’s not me. So, I just try to treat it like I normally would with anyone else. I just go about my business, just be myself and let the cards fall as they may, or chips fall as they may.”
Jimmy was saying all of the right things. None of what he was saying felt insincere. You can tell that Garoppolo just wants to play football.
In today’s episode, Akash and I talk about Jimmy’s comments:
